So versatile no stable should be without it
Bacteria, both good and bad, are everywhere. If a horse has a lowered immunity, or if the bad
organisms are in the majority, they will get the upper hand and the horse will be more susceptible to
bacterial or fungal infections. Organisms can spread everywhere – infections are mainly transferable through brushes, halters and blankets. Horses can also be fungal carriers – even without any visible symptoms. Keeping this in mind, it’s definitely important to manage the fungal and bacterial population.
Cavalor Derma Wash is a hygenice shampoo containing chlorhexidine. It may be used to wash horses that have flaky skin, dull coats or a skin condition. It is the ideal shampoo to wash new arrivals to the yard with to prevent infections.
Don’t forget however that a horses coat is a reflection of its internal health. A dull coat will often be associated with an internal problem.
Derma Wash is pH neutral. Contrary to our skin which has a naturally acidic pH of around 4.0 – 5.5, a horses skin has an optimal pH of 7.0 – 7.4. Products with a low pH such as human shampoo have a hydrophilic nature. They attract moisture and dehydrate the horses skin. The result is dry, flaky skin.
Bleach and powerful degreasers such as washing up liquid have a high pH. Because of their hydrophobic nature they will absorb the tallow making the coat dull and the skin dry and sensitive – often more susceptible to infections.
Cavalor Derma Wash is enriched with glycerin to ensure the skin is kept well hydrated and the coat with a healthy shine.
Derma Wash may also be used to clean horse equipment such as blankets and saddle pads.
To clean small wounds we recommend the use of Derma Spray – which is basically the same product without the soap.
Why use Chlorhexidine?
Chlorhexidine is an excellent disinfectant and stops the growth of bacteria and fungi. Compared to other disinfectant options such as iodine, chlorhexidine will not dry the coat out or colour the skin. It is scientifically proven to have a longer and broader effect.
When developing Derma Wash its components were very carefully selected for optimum quality and efficacy. Certain colorants and soaps can reduce the activity of chlorhexidine. For this reason, Derma Wash does not foam as much as other shampoos.
Directions for use
Put a small amount – around 30 ml into a bucket of warm water and apply directly to the whole body of the horse. Let it soak for a short while and then carefully rinse with warm water afterwards
To avoid infections it is a good idea to wash the horse in this way monthly and after intensive contact with other horses such as at camps and overnight shows.
You may also use this product on your tack and equipment and instead of regular detergent in your horse washing machine. 30ml is normally enough.
