Background

Let’s start with the reason why joint supplements are some of the best selling product in any supplement manufacturers range.

A survey done by Cavalor back in 2018 and published in 2019 suggests that a staggering 66% of horses have suffered lameness as a result of joint disease and 20% of horses have been off work for a year or more with the problem.

It is not only a problem for ageing horses either, as 36% of horses developed the condition by the time they are 8.

As well as the implications for the horse, the implications for the owner are expensive. More than 66% of these horses required 5 orIt is not only a problem for ageing horses either, as 36% of horses developed the condition by the time they are 8. more visits and treatments by vets and 21% needed 10 or more. On average the spend was £2,104 with 5% spending more than £7,500.

75% of owners were worried about their horse developing such problems and 30% ultimately had to retire a horse before their time as a result.

53% missed up to 10 competitions and 17% missed more than 20.

So, it’s a big problem for the modern horse.

Where do joint problem start

In simple terms

  • Overload = Inflammation
  • Free Radical production
  • Thinned Synovia

In the case of overload, oxidative stress induces the production of free radicals. These molecules lack an electron and so “steal” them from other elements leading to damage and thinning of the synovial fluid.

Synovial Fluid

Synovial fluid acts as a shock absorber within the joints of the horse. If this thins then the horses ability to absorb these shocks reduces.

A reduction in this ability leads to cartilage damage and in severe cases bone damage.

Suppressing Inflammation

Most joint problems start with an inflammatory reaction and until this is effectively dealt with joint problems will persist.

Not all joint problems begin in this way however. For instance young horses with growing pains, older horses with degradation problems or sensitive joints caused by exceptions pressure such as bad shoeing.

Antioxidant Functions

Antioxidants protect the cells against free radicals mentioned before. They work by readily donating an electron to those electron deficient free radicals and thus neutralising them.

Common antioxidants are

Vitamin C and E are particularly important in the antioxidant process.

Vitamin E neutralises free radicals that damage the phospholipids in the cell membrane. It inhibits the chain reaction of lipid peroxidase. This generates a radical in itself and this is recovered by the Vitamin C on the cell surface. They work synergistically for maximum effect.
